In celebration of its 70th anniversary, the UAB School of Nursing honored 70 alumni who are leaders in the field of nursing, nurse anesthesia, and health care with its Visionary Leader awards. Two of the 70 award-winners are UAB Medicine leaders: Chief Nursing Officer Terri Poe, DNP, RN, NE-BC, and Family Nurse Practitioner Lindsey Harris, DNP, CRNP, who in 2020 was inducted as the first African-American president of the Alabama State Nurses Association.

UAB Medicine congratulates the 2021 recipients of the Clinical Excellence in Nursing Award, the highest honor available for nursing staff within UAB Health System. Each year, professional nurses and nursing support staff are considered for this award based upon nursing knowledge, technical skills, and clinical leadership.

Some of the people most vulnerable to COVID-19 are those who are unable to leave their homes due to an illness or physical condition yet are at risk of contracting the disease if a caregiver or health care provider inadvertently brings it into their home. To protect this vulnerable population of people in the Birmingham area, members of the House Calls team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are bringing the vaccine to their patients and to eligible caregivers.

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, which is April 18-24 this year, is an annual celebration of the medical laboratory professionals who play a vital role in health care. UAB Medicine takes great pride in the highly skilled medical technologists who work in these labs.

On January 25, 2021, an EF-3 tornado ripped through the community of Fultondale, Alabama. The 100-year-old oak tree in Arnoldo Vasquez-Hernandez’s yard did not stand up to the 150 mph winds that evening.

Children from 20 schools in the Birmingham area turned what is in their hearts into art and created colorful cards for UAB Medicine workers. Morning and evening shift staff will get a handmade valentine along with individually wrapped cookies and popcorn on Sunday, Feb. 14.

We can all agree that 2020 was a difficult year, especially for hospitals and health care workers. But UAB Medicine rose to the COVID-19 challenge, helping UAB earn the No. 1 spot on Forbes magazine’s national list of Best Large Employers for 2021.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, a shortage of clinical staff has been a significant problem for health care organizations. UAB Medicine formed a Pandemic Staffing Task Force to address our nursing shortage, and its call for help received a campus-wide response from nurses, faculty, students, and other staff.
