Passion is defined as having a strong and barely controllable emotion for someone or something, and for alumna Lindsey Harris, DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC (MSN 2011, DNP 2016), that passion is improving the nursing profession and helping current and future nurses reach their fullest potential.

If you’re an RN looking for a new challenge and an alternative to bedside nursing, check out the UAB Medicine Patient Healthcare Coordination Center (PHCC). You will utilize your nursing assessment skills and act autonomously to triage calls from patients, caregivers, and other health care team members while working at a fast but steady pace – which can be a welcome change from the floor. Although you are not at the bedside providing hands-on patient care, you still have meaningful interactions with patients. Our nurses also work in other areas of telehealth nursing, such as remote patient monitoring and care coordination.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Cardiac Intensive Care Unit has received the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ Silver Beacon Award for Excellence. This award recognizes health care organizations, like UAB Hospital, that provide exceptional care through positive patient outcomes and greater overall patient satisfaction.

The annual UAB Medicine Service Awards were created to recognize employees for years of faithful service and acknowledge the hard work and special contributions they make to our organization. These outstanding staff members play an important role in meeting the growing needs of our community, and their service is deeply appreciated. As part of this recognition, two of our longest-serving employees – Doris Brown and Thurman Richardson – share a little about their experiences at UAB Medicine.

In celebration of its 70th anniversary, the UAB School of Nursing honored 70 alumni who are leaders in the field of nursing, nurse anesthesia, and health care with its Visionary Leader awards. Two of the 70 award-winners are UAB Medicine leaders: Chief Nursing Officer Terri Poe, DNP, RN, NE-BC, and Family Nurse Practitioner Lindsey Harris, DNP, CRNP, who in 2020 was inducted as the first African-American president of the Alabama State Nurses Association.

UAB Medicine congratulates the 2021 recipients of the Clinical Excellence in Nursing Award, the highest honor available for nursing staff within UAB Health System. Each year, professional nurses and nursing support staff are considered for this award based upon nursing knowledge, technical skills, and clinical leadership.

Some of the people most vulnerable to COVID-19 are those who are unable to leave their homes due to an illness or physical condition yet are at risk of contracting the disease if a caregiver or health care provider inadvertently brings it into their home. To protect this vulnerable population of people in the Birmingham area, members of the House Calls team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are bringing the vaccine to their patients and to eligible caregivers.
