Jason K. Daniel, MBA, vice president of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation (UAHSF), has been named the 2023 Will Ferniany Academic Medicine Leadership Award recipient.

Delrico Gibson thought he would never make art again. A devastating gasoline explosion Feb. 29, 2020, left Gibson with burns to his face and upper body. His burns were so severe that they literally reshaped the structure of his bones and fused his fingers together.

UAB Hospital has received a 2023 Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ from Healthgrades, which recognizes hospitals that provide an overall positive patient experience during hospital stays. UAB Hospital was one of 445 U.S. hospitals recognized and one of only three in Alabama.

Digital technology is used throughout UAB Medicine for virtual visits, remote patient monitoring, treatment procedures, collecting and using patient data, and much more. In recent years, nursing at UAB Medicine has made greater use of telehealth with approaches that are here to stay – at the bedside, in clinics, and in patients’ homes. These new approaches also help nurses provide more flexible patient care and make better use of the knowledge that experienced nurses have.

Congratulations to the most recent winner: John White, RN! What makes John a DAISY winner? “On Wednesday, March 1, 2023, John White, RN, entered a restaurant in Warrior, Ala. After sitting down to eat his breakfast, he looked over and noticed there were people standing around a person. He went over and checked the individual’s pulse. The person was not breathing and didn’t have a pulse. John immediately assisted the individual to the floor and began chest compressions while someone called 911.

March is National Professional Social Work Month, which recognizes the professionals who guide and support patients in a wide range of settings. UAB Medicine salutes our medical social workers who assist patients with many aspects of illness, hospital stays, and the transition to home or the next level of care.

The Nursing Communication HCAHPS performance domain is a key measure of delivering excellent care and achieving high levels of patient satisfaction. Congratulations to the units listed below on earning Level 5 in Nursing Communication during the past quarter! Your hard work and dedication directly contributed to the highest levels of satisfaction among UAB Medicine patients and visitors.

UAB Medicine employees recently battled for the “tin can trophy” in the 2022 CANstruction event, which was hosted by UAB Medicine’s Men in Nursing Employee Resource Group, UAB Hospital nursing leadership, and the Birmingham Chapter of the American Association of Men in Nursing. CANstruction teams collected canned goods and used them to construct the most impressive structures possible, each with its own theme.

We are pleased to announce the most recent UAB Medicine DAISY Award, recognizing the extraordinary care and compassion that nurses provide for patients and families every day. Submissions and stories are reviewed each month, and then the winner is surprised at a special ceremony.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, along with the Nursing and Nurse Anesthesia chapters of the UAB National Alumni Society, recently hosted the school’s annual Alumni Night.
