UAB Hospital has once again earned international recognition, securing a place as Alabama’s top-ranked hospital on Newsweek’s prestigious list of the World’s Best Hospitals 2026.

UAB Hospital, the flagship hospital of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System, is now the fifth-largest hospital in the nation, up three spots from 2025, according to Becker’s Hospital Review. UAB Hospital has 1,400 hospital beds.

When Christy Nation, MSHA, BSN, RN, reflects on her leadership journey, she doesn’t begin with a title. She begins with growth. Christy began serving as Chief Nursing Officer at UAB St. Vincent’s Hospital in January 2026. Before that, she spent more than six years as Senior Director of Women and Infants Services at UAB Medicine, where she helped lead one of the system’s most active service lines. Her path to executive leadership began long before leadership, though, as a patient care technician in home health while still in nursing school.

University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing alumna Abby Judson, BSN, RN (BSN 2025), has found a shared calling in nursing with her mother, Assistant Professor and three-time alumna Tonya Judson, DNP, RN, NI‐BC, CNE (BSN 1997, MSN 2017, DNP 2021).

In a milestone for UAB Medicine, transplant surgeons have performed the institution’s first robotic kidney transplant surgery, marking a major step toward expanding minimally invasive options for transplant recipients.

Robert Johnson, senior director of Respiratory Services at UAB Medicine, has been inducted into the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) Fellowship Program. This national honor recognizes Johnson for his contributions to the science of respiratory care and for exemplifying the highest standards in the field.

Terri Poe, DNP, has been named the inaugural chief nursing executive for UAB Health System.
