With sweeping views, cutting-edge therapy gyms and 134 patient beds, the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s new $156.7 million inpatient rehabilitation pavilion promises to transform recovery for Alabamians and patients across the region.

For Anna and Sarah Russell, nursing is a family affair. Both sisters are enrolled in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, Anna as a third semester student in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program and Sarah as a Pre-Nursing student. Only two years apart, Sarah and Anna have encouraged each other in their paths towards nursing.

UAB Health System CEO Dawn Bulgarella and UAB Hospital CEO Brenda Carlisle were named to the Becker’s Hospital Review 2025 list of “Women Hospital and Health System Presidents and CEOs to Know.” This national recognition celebrates women across the country who are advancing health care through innovation, equity, and leadership that improves patient care and experiences.

That’s the philosophy of Birmingham native Jeremy Towns, M.D., a physician with UAB Sports & Exercise Medicine who also helps care for the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions football team. His position is symbolic of his full-circle journey from standout high school athlete to NFL player to UAB Medicine physician. This uncommon path influenced how Dr. Towns connects with all of his patients.

UAB Medicine Vice President of Human Resources Julie Makosky was honored with a 2025 HR Impact Award by the Birmingham Business Journal (BBJ). This annual recognition celebrates human resources (HR) professionals across the region who have made significant contributions to their organizations through innovation, leadership, and dedication to the people they serve.

UAB Hospital has been reverified as a Level I adult trauma center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT) and remains the only ACS-Level I adult trauma center in the state of Alabama.

The UAB Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery’s Wound, Ostomy and Continence care team received the 2025 Employer Recognition Award from the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB), joining an elite group of institutions recognized for outstanding support of nursing in wound, ostomy and continence (WOC) care.

The three-time alumna of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing uses her clinical expertise as a Nursing Professional Development Specialist in the Center for Nursing Excellence and Center for Psychiatric Medicine at UAB Hospital to provide accessible mental health education on social media.
