UAB Medicine’s Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and Acute Trauma Care Unit (ATCU) each received a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). These awards recognize units that distinguish themselves by providing high-quality patient care in a healthy work environment. With these latest honors, UAB Medicine’s critical-care nursing units have earned five Beacon Awards over the past four years.

UAB Hospital is ranked No. 48 in the United States on Newsweek magazine’s 2024 list of the World’s Best Hospitals, which studied data from 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries. Though not listed among the top 250 worldwide, UAB ranked within the top 50 out of 412 U.S. hospitals surveyed.

Becker’s Hospital Review named UAB Medicine Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) John Petrov to its 2024 list of CHROs and Chief People Officers to Know.

UAB Hospital, which includes UAB Highlands Hospital and UAB’s outpatient clinics, was granted recognition as a Magnet-designated organization today for the sixth consecutive time by the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program®. UAB Hospital is only the 19th hospital worldwide to receive this designation six consecutive times and is the only hospital in Alabama designated a Magnet organization.

Christina Humphrey, LMSW, a UAB social worker who serves gynecologic oncology patients, has been named a Legacy of Laura Healthcare Hero for 2024. This award is presented annually by the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation to a health care professional who fosters hope, compassion, positivity, and strength among patients with gynecologic cancer and survivors.

The annual UAB Medicine Service Awards recognize employees for years of faithful service and acknowledge the special contributions they make to our organization. As part of the 2023 recognition, Janie Roberson – senior director of Anatomic Pathology, Laboratory Quality, and the Cellular Therapy Laboratory – looks back on her nearly 46 years at UAB.

Alan Mayes, RN, a post-kidney transplant coordinator with the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute, retired in January 2024. During his long career, Mayes played a role in advances at UAB Medicine generally and in transplant medicine specifically. His supervisors and colleagues say he’ll be hard to replace.

UAB Medicine Nurse Manager Natalie Fortson, RN, has been accepted into a prestigious leadership fellowship, the NurseTRUST Emerging Leaders Program, which is designed for nurses who are new to leadership roles.

Time is the key to preventing death and disability from stroke. So, when a patient suffering a stroke arrives at the UAB Hospital Emergency Department (ED), a rapid response team strives to provide the most appropriate care in the shortest time possible.

UAB Medicine employees work together daily to save lives, and sometimes it’s for one of their own. This was the case with Joy Marsh, an administrative support specialist at the UAB Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Lab, who suffered a heart attack shortly after arriving at work in November 2023. Her coworkers helped transport her to the UAB Emergency Department, then a surgery and cardiology team inserted a tiny tube called a stent to reopen a section of artery that was 100% blocked.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has received eight 2024 Women’s Choice Awards designations for women’s health practice areas.

UAB Medicine Anesthesiology is pleased to announce the launch of its first podcast for medical professionals. Fresh Flow is a collaboration between UAB Medicine and the Association of Anesthesia Clinical Directors (AACD) and hosted by UAB’s Matthew Sherrer, M.D. MBA, FASA, FAACD, and Mitchell H. Tsai, M.D., MMM, FASA, FAACD, from the University of Vermont.
