Congratulations to the most recent winner: John White, RN! What makes John a DAISY winner? “On Wednesday, March 1, 2023, John White, RN, entered a restaurant in Warrior, Ala. After sitting down to eat his breakfast, he looked over and noticed there were people standing around a person. He went over and checked the individual’s pulse. The person was not breathing and didn’t have a pulse. John immediately assisted the individual to the floor and began chest compressions while someone called 911.

March is National Professional Social Work Month, which recognizes the professionals who guide and support patients in a wide range of settings. UAB Medicine employees recently battled for the “tin can trophy” in the 2022 CANstruction event, which was hosted by UAB Medicine’s Men in Nursing Employee Resource Group, UAB Hospital nursing leadership, and the Birmingham Chapter of the American Association of Men in Nursing. CANstruction teams collected canned goods and used them to construct the most impressive structures possible, each with its own theme.

We are pleased to announce the most recent UAB Medicine DAISY Award, recognizing the extraordinary care and compassion that nurses provide for patients and families every day. Submissions and stories are reviewed each month, and then the winner is surprised at a special ceremony.

The UAB Medicine Human Resources recruitment team has been busy attending recruitment events of all kinds this year – for nurses and pharmacy technicians to events for radiologic technologists, physical therapists, and everything in between. Everyone has been eager to get back out into the community to recruit face to face with potential candidates, marking a welcome change from the virtual events conducted during the first two years of the pandemic.

UAB Nurse Wellness Manager Toni Beam, MSN, RN, NE-BC, has a deep understanding of the demands placed on nursing services staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, and an even deeper commitment to supporting their well-being throughout their careers. “As frontline healthcare providers, our nursing services staff felt the full weight of COVID. They watched a novel virus unfold while having to develop and implement new policies and procedures, and grapple with PPE shortages and the reprocessing of N95 masks,” she says. “It wore them down in many ways.”
