UAB Medicine congratulates the 2022 recipients of the Clinical Excellence in Nursing Award, the highest honor available for nursing staff.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit has been awarded the silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.

Depending on what color scrubs you wear, you may already know that March 19 is Certified Nurses Day. This annual observance celebrates nurses worldwide who contribute to better patient outcomes through earning and maintaining advanced credentials in their specialty.

The Nursing Communication HCAHPS performance domain is a key measure of delivering excellent care and achieving high levels of patient satisfaction. Congratulations to:  Acute Care for Elders Unit (4 Main), Gastrointestinal Surgical Unit (GISU), and Thoracic Surgery (W5N) on earning Level 5 in Nursing Communication during the past quarter! Your hard work and dedication directly contributed to the highest levels of satisfaction among UAB Medicine patients and visitors.

Passion is defined as having a strong and barely controllable emotion for someone or something, and for alumna Lindsey Harris, DNP, CRNP, FNP-BC (MSN 2011, DNP 2016), that passion is improving the nursing profession and helping current and future nurses reach their fullest potential.

If you’re an RN looking for a new challenge and an alternative to bedside nursing, check out the UAB Medicine Patient Healthcare Coordination Center (PHCC). You will utilize your nursing assessment skills and act autonomously to triage calls from patients, caregivers, and other health care team members while working at a fast but steady pace – which can be a welcome change from the floor. Although you are not at the bedside providing hands-on patient care, you still have meaningful interactions with patients. Our nurses also work in other areas of telehealth nursing, such as remote patient monitoring and care coordination.

In celebration of its 70th anniversary, the UAB School of Nursing honored 70 alumni who are leaders in the field of nursing, nurse anesthesia, and health care with its Visionary Leader awards. Two of the 70 award-winners are UAB Medicine leaders: Chief Nursing Officer Terri Poe, DNP, RN, NE-BC, and Family Nurse Practitioner Lindsey Harris, DNP, CRNP, who in 2020 was inducted as the first African-American president of the Alabama State Nurses Association.
