Digital technology is used throughout UAB Medicine for virtual visits, remote patient monitoring, treatment procedures, collecting and using patient data, and much more. In recent years, nursing at UAB Medicine has made greater use of telehealth with approaches that are here to stay – at the bedside, in clinics, and in patients’ homes. These new approaches also help nurses provide more flexible patient care and make better use of the knowledge that experienced nurses have.

UAB Medicine nursing staff celebrated at a variety of events this May during Nurses Week 2023. The activities included photo booths, a vendor fair, an award ceremony, an employee picnic, and the big event: UAB Nurses Night Out. It was all about recognizing our nurses for consistently giving their best to care for patients and their families. Take a look at all the fun we had!

UAB Medicine congratulates the 2023 recipients of the Clinical Excellence in Nursing Award, the highest honor available for nursing staff. Each year, professional nurses and nursing support staff are considered for this award based upon nursing knowledge, technical skills, and clinical leadership. The awards are presented during the American Nurses Association’s annual National Nurses Week, which begins each year on May 6 and concludes on May 12, Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

Congratulations to the most recent winner: John White, RN! What makes John a DAISY winner? “On Wednesday, March 1, 2023, John White, RN, entered a restaurant in Warrior, Ala. After sitting down to eat his breakfast, he looked over and noticed there were people standing around a person. He went over and checked the individual’s pulse. The person was not breathing and didn’t have a pulse. John immediately assisted the individual to the floor and began chest compressions while someone called 911.

The loss of a loved one can be hard. It may be one of the most difficult experiences in a person’s life. Felicia Vaughn, a registered nurse at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Center for Palliative and Supportive Care, is supporting grieving families in a special way — with a heartbeat in a bottle.

UAB Medicine employees recently battled for the “tin can trophy” in the 2022 CANstruction event, which was hosted by UAB Medicine’s Men in Nursing Employee Resource Group, UAB Hospital nursing leadership, and the Birmingham Chapter of the American Association of Men in Nursing. CANstruction teams collected canned goods and used them to construct the most impressive structures possible, each with its own theme.

We are pleased to announce the most recent UAB Medicine DAISY Award, recognizing the extraordinary care and compassion that nurses provide for patients and families every day. Submissions and stories are reviewed each month, and then the winner is surprised at a special ceremony.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, along with the Nursing and Nurse Anesthesia chapters of the UAB National Alumni Society, recently hosted the school’s annual Alumni Night.
