Nursing teams from UAB Medicine and Children’s of Alabama gathered on Oct. 12 for the second annual Nurses Block Party, a fall celebration featuring food, games, face-painting, and community fellowship.

The UAB School of Nursing Bachelor of Science in Nursing Pathway is expanding to launch a summer cohort in Summer 2026, a strategic effort to address workforce needs and support a greater number of students pursuing nursing careers. The School’s BSN Pathway, ranked No. 13 nationally and No. 1 in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report, will admit BSN students year-round, with most graduates accepting positions and practicing in Alabama.

The Heart Failure Society of America is recognizing UAB’s Heart FailuRe Transitional Care Services for Adults (HRTSA) Clinic team with a 2025 Outstanding Heart Failure Care Team Award.

UAB Medicine’s Advanced Practice Provider Executive Council, in collaboration with the APP Central Office, presented the third annual APP Champion Awards in September. UAB Nursing would like to congratulate the latest nurse residents on completing their program. The nurse residency is a comprehensive, 12-month program for newly licensed nurses that helps them transition into more competent clinical practice.

Shelby Davis always knew she wanted to work with babies, but it wasn’t until she had her own that she found her calling as a nurse in the Continuing Care Nursery (CCN) at the UAB Women & Infants Center.

In Birmingham, survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases lag behind national averages. But a new research effort at UAB Medicine is taking steps to close that gap – starting with a phone call.

It’s a story Jamie Hazel has heard throughout her life. Her birth was a miracle, because her mother developed high blood pressure during pregnancy and was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a potentially serious condition.

Congratulations to the most recent winner, Blair Hagood, RN. Recently, Blair shared a story about a life-changing event with his manager. The summary was written and submitted by Blair’s manager, nominating Blair for the DAISY Award based on his heroic efforts.

Thanks to a collaboration with the Birmingham Region Health Partnership (BRHP), UAB Medicine is offering training pathways for people interested in health care roles such as certified medical assistant, ophthalmic technician, and surgical technologist. The goal is to build a robust pipeline of skilled and qualified workers for certain medical jobs that are in high demand within the region.

For Anna and Sarah Russell, nursing is a family affair. Both sisters are enrolled in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, Anna as a third semester student in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program and Sarah as a Pre-Nursing student. Only two years apart, Sarah and Anna have encouraged each other in their paths towards nursing.
