In Birmingham, survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases lag behind national averages. But a new research effort at UAB Medicine is taking steps to close that gap – starting with a phone call.

It’s a story Jamie Hazel has heard throughout her life. Her birth was a miracle, because her mother developed high blood pressure during pregnancy and was diagnosed with preeclampsia, a potentially serious condition.

Congratulations to the most recent winner, Blair Hagood, RN. Recently, Blair shared a story about a life-changing event with his manager. The summary was written and submitted by Blair’s manager, nominating Blair for the DAISY Award based on his heroic efforts.

Thanks to a collaboration with the Birmingham Region Health Partnership (BRHP), UAB Medicine is offering training pathways for people interested in health care roles such as certified medical assistant, ophthalmic technician, and surgical technologist. The goal is to build a robust pipeline of skilled and qualified workers for certain medical jobs that are in high demand within the region.

For Anna and Sarah Russell, nursing is a family affair. Both sisters are enrolled in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, Anna as a third semester student in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program and Sarah as a Pre-Nursing student. Only two years apart, Sarah and Anna have encouraged each other in their paths towards nursing.

“Being recognized as the top hospital in the state and metro area is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our physicians, nurses and staff,” said Dawn Bulgarella, CEO of the UAB Health System.

The UAB Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery’s Wound, Ostomy and Continence care team received the 2025 Employer Recognition Award from the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB), joining an elite group of institutions recognized for outstanding support of nursing in wound, ostomy and continence (WOC) care.

UAB Nursing would like to congratulate the latest nurse residents on completing their program. The nurse residency is a comprehensive, 12-month program for newly licensed nurses that helps them transition into more competent clinical practice.

The three-time alumna of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing uses her clinical expertise as a Nursing Professional Development Specialist in the Center for Nursing Excellence and Center for Psychiatric Medicine at UAB Hospital to provide accessible mental health education on social media.
