Amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual periods, which is defined as one or more missed periods in women of reproductive age. If a female age 15 or older has gone through the symptoms of puberty but has not begun menstruating, this is considered primary amenorrhea. For adult women who have missed at least three menstrual periods in a row, this is called secondary amenorrhea.
Pregnancy is the most common cause of amenorrhea. Other causes include some types of birth control, a lack of certain reproductive organs, and an imbalance in hormone levels. Excessive stress, weight loss, or exercise also can cause amenorrhea, as can a type of medication called corticosteroids. Amenorrhea often can be resolved by treating the underlying cause. Treatments vary but can include hormone therapy and surgery.
