Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for painful cramps that occur in the lower abdomen before or during a woman’s menstrual period. Menstrual cramps usually are felt as dull, throbbing or cramping pains. There are two types of dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea is another name for common menstrual cramps, which can be mild or severe enough to disrupt daily activities. These cramps often start just before or when the period begins and last one to three days. Secondary dysmenorrhea is pain caused by a disorder in the reproductive organs. These cramps begin earlier in the cycle and last longer than common menstrual cramps. Cramps tend to disappear once a woman has given birth.
