UAB Orthopaedics Services

Orthopaedics is the area of medicine that focuses on injuries and diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system. This system is made up of bones, muscles, joints, and ligaments that connect the other parts together. It allows us to move, bear weight, and produce new blood cells, among other functions.

The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides both inpatient and outpatient care, primarily at UAB Hospital-Highlands but also at several other locations on or near the UAB campus. These include UAB Hospital and the adjacent Russell Ambulatory Center; Children’s of Alabama and its Sports Medicine Clinic; the Birmingham VA Medical Center; and Cooper Green Mercy Health Services. Orthopaedic services also are available at UAB Medicine’s satellite clinics in Leeds, Hoover, and Gardendale.

UAB Orthopaedics develops complete care plans by working closely with other medical specialties such as imaging, physical rehabilitation, nutritional therapy, and oncology. These plans are customized for each patient, with the goal of improving mobility and reducing pain. In addition, the UAB Orthopaedic Optimization Clinic helps patients prepare for knee or hip replacement with education and other services aimed at improving overall results. This includes a robust joints care team that supports patients through every step of their journey.
