How to Refer a Patient

For referrals, please call the UAB Orthopaedics Call Center at 205-930-8339 and select option 1 twice. The UAB Orthopaedics Call Center is a service open Monday- Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. CT that connects physicians anywhere in the country with UAB Orthopaedic specialists. Records and referral papers can be faxed to medical records at 205-930-8575.

For inpatient transfers, please call UAB MIST (Medical Information Services via Telephone) at 1-800-UAB-MIST (1-800-822-6478) or email mist@uabmc.edu. UAB MIST is a toll-free, 24-hour service that connects physicians anywhere in the country with UAB Medicine specialists.

Program Highlights

UAB Orthopaedics uses surgical and non-surgical approaches to treat spinal disorders affecting the neck or back, including herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, deformities, tumors, failed back surgeries, and spinal trauma. Our surgeons have advanced training, and they share their expertise by training other surgeons and lecturing throughout the United States. Techniques and procedures commonly used by these experienced surgeons include:

  • Conservative options such as physical therapy and epidural and spinal nerve injections
  • Spinal decompression
  • Discectomy
  • Cervical and lumbar spinal fusions
  • Spinal reconstruction
  • Motion-preserving surgeries, including disc replacements
