Joining our team of histocompatibility laboratory technologists empowers you to move medicine forward, build a lasting career, and develop leadership skills.
UAB Medicine has one of the country’s largest and busiest transplant programs, performing kidney, heart, liver, lung, pancreas, and bone marrow/HSC transplants, as well as multi-organ procedures. During the last half-century, the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute has completed more than 14,000 successful transplants and pioneered groundbreaking research, new medicines, and innovative techniques that we in turn teach to others. These important advancements have helped improve the service we provide to Alabama residents and furthered our reputation in the field of transplantation.
UAB’s Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Lab, the only one in Alabama, is among the largest and most respected of 200 similar laboratories in the United States that conduct high-complexity tests to determine compatibility with prospective transplant recipients. This team performs crucial work around the clock under time-sensitive circumstances.
Job Profile
Prior to transplant, highly trained technologists perform risk assessments for patients and donors to minimize the chance of organ rejection and monitor recipients for rejection after transplant. No transplant can be performed until the lab team identifies the donor’s and the potential recipient’s histocompatibility antigens, known as human leukocyte antigens (HLA), and then checks for preformed anti-HLA antibodies.
