Collaboration

As a CRNA at UAB, you will collaborate as a member of an anesthesia care team to plan and administer competent, compassionate, and patient-centered anesthesia services. Executing a successful shared mission and vision with all members of the anesthesia care team requires teamwork, professionalism, mutual respect, and continual communication among all members of the care team.

Outside of the operating room, CRNAs serve on interdisciplinary committees and lead projects designed to improve quality and deliver safer, more cost-effective care. They work closely with UAB’s multiple simulation labs to develop training, facilitate research, and implement positive change. They also instruct and train student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs).

Our large team affords flexibility in scheduling that contributes to your need for work/life balance. We offer shifts of 8, 10, and 12 hours, with minimal on-call time. Our scheduling app makes it easy to self-schedule, request time off, and swap shifts if needed.

Tuition Assistance & Loan Forgiveness

For those interested in pursuing a doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) or master’s degree, UAB Medicine provides 100% tuition assistance at UAB through our Educational Assistance Program, while spouses and dependents receive 50% assistance at the undergraduate level. In addition, UAB Medicine is an eligible employer under the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness program for qualifying educational loans.

Continuing Education

Our CRNAs have access to weekly departmental CEUs on a wide variety of topics, as well as reimbursement, travel stipends, and professional leave for conferences and other learning opportunities.

Advanced Practice Provider Executive Council

We recognize the value of APPs and have a formal structure to advocate for and support you. We come together to discuss issues, identify goals, and expand our combined knowledge and experience, drawing upon the newest evidence-based research.

The UAB Division of Community Anesthesia includes a group of anesthesiologists and CRNAs that provide services to some Ascension St. Vincent’s facilities. The division allows busy community hospitals to use the cutting-edge, evidence-based approach to medicine found within an academic environment. These CRNAs have autonomy and enjoy a collegial working relationship with anesthesiologists and surgeons.

Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham

The division’s services are provided at the Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham campus, located near downtown Birmingham. The hospital and adjoining surgery centers covered by the division feature numerous surgical specialties, including a busy sports medicine orthopaedic practice, obstetric, cardiac, neuro, vascular, and general surgery, among many others. There are many opportunities to become proficient in any field of anesthesia for both new graduates and veterans, as the division provides anesthesia services for more than 50,000 procedures annually across 53 operating rooms and surgical suites. The team includes 15 anesthesiologists and more than 70 CRNAs who work together to provide the best possible care.

A sign-on bonus up to $36,000 may be available for new hires practicing at Ascension St. Vincent’s Birmingham. In addition, SRNAs joining this team have the opportunity to receive additional compensation (up to $12,000) through an Earn While You Learn program. Contact your recruiter for more details.

Ascension St. Vincent’s East

The division’s services are provided at the Ascension St. Vincent’s East campus, located northeast of Birmingham near the Trussville community. Ascension St. Vincent’s East is an acute care hospital that offers many surgical specialties, including orthopaedics, cardiac, GI, urologic, and a variety of ambulatory diagnostic services. The division provides anesthesia services for more than 10,000 procedures annually within 12 operating rooms. The team includes six anesthesiologists and more than 19 CRNAs who work together to provide the best possible care.
