PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at UAB Hospital is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). It builds on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions. Upon completion, residents will be eligible for board certification and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. This program provides a structured learning environment in which residents gain experience in all aspects of pharmacy practice, while allowing flexibility so that residents may pursue areas of interest.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at UAB Hospital includes a combination of required learning experiences (rotations) and elective learning experiences tailored to the residents’ interest areas.

Orientation provides a general overview of the departmental organization, support units, and resident responsibilities. Benefits include health and accident insurance, holiday time off, and support to attend residency related professional conference(s).

Why did you choose UAB Medicine?
As a fourth-year pharmacy student, I completed two advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) rotations at UAB. I witnessed firsthand the meaningful impact pharmacists have as members of the health care team in both inpatient and ambulatory care settings. I quickly recognized the qualities that make UAB an exceptional place to train and work.

The wide selection of rotations in various specialty areas allows residents to tailor their training to their interests and long-term goals. Through my experiences and the interview process, I knew UAB would challenge me to grow while supporting me with a team of dedicated and inspiring pharmacists. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to begin my training at UAB.

Why did you choose UAB Medicine?
I completed an advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) rotation at UAB, and I was immediately impressed with the culture, opportunities, and support provided. The pharmacy team and preceptors genuinely seemed to invest in those they trained and each other, which creates a positive work environment. Additionally, the wide variety of available experiences and ability to tailor my rotations to my interests was appealing.

As UAB is a large, specialized academic medical center, there are many opportunities for growth, including teaching and learning from health care team members and students and exposure to many unique challenges. I knew this would enhance my confidence as a practitioner tremendously and align with my professional goals. I am so thankful to begin my career as a UAB pharmacy resident!

Why did you choose UAB Medicine?
Working at UAB has been my career aspiration for quite some time, well before entering the residency application process during my APPE year. It all started during my second year of undergraduate studies, when I was able to shadow in UAB Hospital’s Nuclear Pharmacy Department shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. This experience opened my eyes to UAB’s commitment to excellence and cutting-edge therapies that provide the best possible patient care.

Shortly after my first shadowing experience, I was blessed with the opportunity to work at The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital Pharmacy during the summers and winters between semesters of my undergraduate studies and pharmacy school. I greatly enjoyed working with my colleagues and supervisors, and they created an amazing environment that felt like home every summer and winter break. During this time, I had numerous opportunities to shadow pharmacists in multiple therapeutic areas in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, which were invaluable experiences. Additionally, I completed three APPE rotations with UAB in Infectious Diseases, Central Pharmacy, and the chronic kidney disease area. Each and every experience I’ve had with UAB has shown me that UAB goes above and beyond for all patients and fosters a fantastic work environment while doing so. It is for this reason that I am incredibly proud and blessed to be a part of UAB in the Pharmacy Residency Program.

Why did you choose UAB Medicine?
When researching PGY1 residency programs, UAB stood out to me as a large academic medical center offering vast opportunities for professional growth and development. Although I grew up several hours from Birmingham, it was common to hear of family, friends, and neighbors traveling to UAB to receive lifesaving care. I was inspired by the idea of contributing to that level of impact – not only within my new community but across the entire Southeast. When I interviewed with UAB, I knew it was the right place for me. I recognized that the program was committed to providing its residents with the opportunities and experiences needed to become the pharmacist each one dreams of being.
