UAB Orthopaedics Services

Orthopaedics is the area of medicine that focuses on injuries and diseases that affect the musculoskeletal system. This system is made up of bones, muscles, joints, and ligaments that connect the other parts together. It allows us to move, bear weight, and produce new blood cells, among other functions.

The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides both inpatient and outpatient care, primarily at UAB Hospital-Highlands but also at several other locations on or near the UAB campus. These include UAB Hospital and the adjacent Russell Ambulatory Center; Children’s of Alabama and its Sports Medicine Center; the Veterans Affairs Hospital; and Cooper Green Mercy Health Services. Orthopaedic services also are available at UAB’s satellite clinics in Leeds and Gardendale. UAB Orthopaedics works closely with other medical specialties – including imaging, physical rehabilitation, nutritional therapy, and oncology – to develop complete care plans. These plans are customized for each patient, with the goal of improving mobility and reducing pain.
