Amanda knew that Adam had Goodpasture syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that causes the body to make antibodies that attack the lungs and kidneys.
“When I turned 18, Adam got really sick and was in and out of the hospital a lot,” Amanda recalled. “Ultimately, we were told that he needed a kidney transplant.”

With help from her care team at UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center, Christy Moore is recovering from a traumatic brain injury caused by a gunshot wound. Despite it turning her life upside down, this senior at Central High School in Phenix City, Ala., approaches her recovery with a positive attitude.

For Floyd Lawson, it started off as a normal weekend workout at his local YMCA branch. A veteran, husband, grandfather and gym regular, Lawson usually spends two hours or so at the gym doing cardio, stretching, lifting weights and then a visit to the steam room. To say he is active and in good health is an understatement.

UAB School of Nursing student Emily Fonville’s path to becoming a nurse has not been without its challenges. Diagnosed with a severe case of Type 1 diabetes in 2015, Fonville has been hospitalized 37 times since then. While her complicated health history has tested her in numerous ways, it was through her treatment and health care experiences that she found her calling and UAB.

UAB Nursing would like to congratulate the latest nurse residents on completing their program. The Nurse Residency is a comprehensive, 12-month program for newly licensed nurses that helps them transition into more competent clinical practice.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham celebrated the relocation and expansion of services of its primary care clinic in the Birmingham area today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new clinic location in Lee Branch. The staff at UAB Medicine Lee Branch Primary and Specialty Care will see adult patients for a wide range of non-emergency medical conditions.

UAB Medicine nursing staff celebrated at a variety of events this May during Nurses Week 2024. The activities included a Birmingham Barons baseball game, a scavenger hunt, photo booths, an award ceremony, a wellness conference, and tailgate events. It was all about recognizing our nurses for consistently giving their best to care for patients and their families. Take a look at all the fun we had!
