Nationally Recognized Nursing Care
In 2011, UAB Hospital was granted recognition as a Magnet hospital for the third time by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, signifying its place in an elite group of fewer than 400 hospitals around the world acknowledged as centers for nursing excellence. UAB is the only adult hospital in the state that holds Magnet-certification.
Parent's Choice Awards
UAB's Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was selected by Birmingham parents as the Best Hospital NICU in Birmingham and Alabama Baby magazines' 2013 Parent's Choice Awards, the third year in a row it received the award. It is the largest all-private room NICU in the country, caring for more than 1,500 babies each year.
G. Wright Bates, M.D., associate professor and director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, was runner-up in the 2013 Parent's Choice Awards and took honors as the Best Fertility Specialist in the 2012 Parent's Choice Awards, the second year in a row he won the award. Dr. Bates, an Alabama native who completed his training at Harvard Medical School, has helped countless start a family. UAB's Infertility program offers the most advanced treatments and technology in a warm and caring environment.
Maternal Fetal Medicine Networks
UAB's Maternal Fetal Medicine Program is one of the largest in the country. We are one of only 14 centers nationwide, and the only one in Alabama to participate in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network (MFMN). This partnership has produced groundbreaking achievements in high-risk pregnancy research. Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians (who are available in-house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year) have access to new treatments that are often not yet available elsewhere. These treatments can reduce the chance of a recurrent preterm birth by one-third to one-half.
Level IV Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU)
Together with Children's Hospital of Alabama, UAB's Regional NICU is Alabama's only Level IV Unit, providing the highest and most comprehensive level of care for premature and sick newborns. UAB's survival rate and rate of survival without handicap for all premature babies is among the best in the country year after year. Our neonatologists are available in house 24/7/365, whenever a baby may need specialized care.
Center of Excellence for Continence
The National Association For Continence (NAFC) named the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Continence and Urogynecology Care Clinics its first Center of Excellence: Continence Care, 2014-2019. For patients experiencing incontinence and other pelvic floor disorders, our urogynecology specialists are focused on improving their quality of life with new treatment options, many of which were developed at UAB and don't always involve surgery.
World-Renowned Gynecologic Cancer Specialists
UAB is home to Alabama's only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Cancer specialists work together to design a treatment plan for each patient's individual needs.
UAB was named to the 2013 list of WomenCertified's top 100 hospitals based on female patient satisfaction. The hospitals were cited for demonstrating extraordinary service in meeting the needs of women and their families. WomenCertified is a consumer advocacy group that specializes in recommending businesses friendly to women.
