Robotic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive procedure in which the uterus (womb) is removed using the da Vinci surgical robot. The surgeon’s hands do the work using the robot as a tool that allows for precise movements, a 360° range of motion, and a magnified, high definition 3-D view of the operating site. Robotic hysterectomy surgery has several benefits when compared to traditional hysterectomy surgery, including a faster recovery time, less pain, and smaller incisions. Other benefits of robotic hysterectomy include minimal blood loss, minimal or no scarring, shorter hospital stays, reduced risk of trauma to surrounding tissue, and less disruption to other organs and tissues near the site of the surgery. Patients may be eligible for robotic hysterectomy for benign conditions such as adenomyosis, dysmenorrhea, and uterine fibroids; and for cancerous conditions such as uterine, endometrial, ovarian, and cervical cancers. Hysterectomy requires hospitalization – but generally only one night, whereas traditional hysterectomy requires two to three nights in the hospital.
