Male Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control. It is a common condition that can develop at any age, but it tends to occur more often later in life. Although it can be embarrassing, it is highly treatable and is not a normal part of the aging process. Symptoms range from mild leaking to uncontrollable wetting.

There are two types of urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence is caused by weakness in the muscles that keep the bladder closed, which can cause accidents when laughing, coughing, sneezing, or lifting a heavy object. The second type, overactive bladder, causes a strong urge to urinate, even if there is little to no urine in the bladder. Some men experience both types of urinary incontinence, which is known as mixed incontinence. Incontinence in men often is seen after surgical or radiation treatments for prostate or colon cancer.

UAB Medicine uses a comprehensive approach to treat male urinary incontinence, combining our expertise in urology and surgery, as needed. We offer a variety of treatments, which can include medication, physical and behavioral therapy, bladder control strategies, biofeedback, fluid and diet management, and surgery. Your treatment options depend on your diagnosis and your medical and surgical histories.

If surgery is offered, options include a procedure that involves implanting a mesh sling to support the urethra and help fight stress incontinence. Other surgical options include the artificial urinary sphincter. Botox injections may be offered to treat overactive bladder. We also offer sacral neuromodulation, in which an electrical device is implanted to stimulate the sacral nerve, which may improve communication between the bladder and the brain.

UAB actively participates in clinical research trials of promising new drugs and therapies for urinary incontinence. Our surgical specialists have undergone advanced training in treating urinary incontinence in men. We offer the latest cutting-edge procedures and techniques to our patients. The National Association For Continence recognized UAB as its first Center of Excellence for Continence Care for 2014-2019.
