I practiced ophthalmology for 40 years in Cullman, Alabama, before retiring two years ago. When I look back at my career, I often reflect on my residency at the Eye Foundation Hospital (EFH), now known as Callahan Eye Hospital where I experienced several highlights of my career.

UAB Callahan Eye Hospital Clinics is expanding to Trussville, where it will open its 14th location in early 2021 on U.S. Highway 11.

Diabetic eye disease is a group of eye conditions that people with diabetes can develop. If left untreated, these conditions can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. The longer someone has diabetes, the more likely it is that they will get an eye disease.

In 2019, we served over 160,000 adult and pediatric patients, expanded our satellite clinics to nine locations to create more access to care, performed over 14,000 surgical procedures, and treated 7,100 patients in our emergency department – the only freestanding Level 1 Ocular Trauma Center in the country.

Hogan Knox, MD, has joined the clinical faculty at Callahan Eye Hospital & Clinics. As an assistant professor and ophthalmologist with the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Dr. Knox recently completed his fellowship in glaucoma but also sees patients for cataract services and general ophthalmology.

Michael Callahan, MD, a professor with the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, was selected as a member of the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame. Dr. Callahan was chosen for this honor because of his outstanding contributions and exemplary service to health care throughout the state of Alabama.
