The Environmental Lung Disease Clinic at UAB Medicine takes a new approach in caring for those who may have been exposed to various environmental irritants. This includes inhaling or having contact with certain types of dust, such as coal, silica, asbestos, beryllium, and cadmium.
Common symptoms of these exposures include:
- Shortness of breath, especially with activity
- Cough with productive sputum (mucus)
- Chest wall discomfort
The Environmental Lung Disease Clinic at UAB Medicine is the first clinic of its kind in Alabama, and it provides patient-centered care plans that include complete physical evaluations, testing, and treatment services. Treatment is based on many factors, including work history, how serious your symptoms are, and overall health condition, all of which will be evaluated by the clinic. Past medical records or imaging scans related to your exposure may be requested.
