Environmental Lung Disease Clinic

The Environmental Lung Disease Clinic at UAB Medicine is the first of its kind in Alabama. It provides complete care to those with confirmed or suspected lung disease due to environmental or occupational irritants such as coal, silica, asbestos, beryllium, cadmium, toxic burn pits, and other chemicals. Prolonged exposure to these compounds can lead to various lung conditions which may develop slowly and may not show symptoms until many years after the exposure has ended.

Common symptoms of these exposures include:

  • Shortness of breath, especially with activity
  • Cough with productive sputum (mucus)
  • Chest wall discomfort

To make an appointment, please call 205-996-5864. The clinic’s evaluation process includes a detailed history of exposures and symptoms, a breathing test, chest imaging scans, and an oxygen test.
