Opened in 1988, the 1917 Clinic provides medical and social services to adult patients infected with HIV, including dental care, mental health care, and specialty medical care.

About

The 1917 Clinic is the largest HIV health care unit in Alabama and one of the country’s leading HIV clinics. Its mission is to address the needs of patients, their families and significant others, doctors and scientists, and the community in responding to the urgent and unique issues surrounding HIV/AIDS.

In December 2020, the clinic moved to a location in the former Dewberry Building on 5th Avenue South. The location is just two blocks away from Birmingham AIDS Outreach, which is one of our community partners and where many of our patients also go. This location includes:

  • Outpatient, dental, and research clinics
  • UAB Pharmacy
  • Magic City Wellness Center
  • A resource center for patients with computer/Internet access, a teaching kitchen, a fitness area, and more
  • Oral and Long-Acting Injectable PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

The 1917 Clinic receives Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Modernization Act funding to provide care for low-income, uninsured, and under-insured HIV-infected adults, regardless of any pre-existing or non-HIV-related conditions. Patients with HIV are not denied service based on their inability to pay copays, sliding-scale fees, or other payments, nor are they denied services if they have outstanding bills with the clinic.

Parking

Free parking is available at the building. The MAX Transit bus No. 17 stops within 1 block of the entrance.

UAB PrEP Clinic

The UAB PrEP Clinic provides sexual health medications and prevention services, especially for patients at high risk. These medications include:

  • Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medications, which are given to patients who are HIV-negative to lower their risk of getting the virus
  • Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP), which is an antibiotic given to prevent bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within 72 hours of having sex without a condom
  • Vaccines to prevent the HPV and hepatitis B viruses

We’re here to help you learn more about protecting and empowering your sexual health. To make an appointment, please call 205-975-9232 or email UAB-PrEP@uabmc.edu.

What is PrEP?

PrEP is an HIV-prevention program that includes anti-HIV medications. These drugs are safe and effective in reducing HIV risk when taken as part of a package of prevention services.

The UAB PrEP Clinic offers all approved options for PrEP, including oral and injectable versions. Our providers can help you choose what works best for you.

Is PrEP right for me?

You should consider PrEP if you want to lower your risk of HIV, especially if:

  • You recently took PEP medications (post-exposure prophylaxis)
  • Your partner is HIV-positive and has an unknown or detectable viral load (a measure of how active the virus is)
  • You have sex without condoms
  • You’ve been diagnosed with an STI in the past six months
  • You inject substances and share needles or other injection equipment
Can I take PrEP during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

If you are thinking about getting pregnant and your partner is HIV-positive, talk to your health care provider about PrEP. It may be an option for helping prevent HIV transmission to you and your baby while you try to get pregnant, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding.

How can I pay for PrEP?

Most insurance companies cover PrEP and related expenses (i.e. clinic visits and lab work), at little to no cost to patients.

  • If you are uninsured, you can still access PrEP. Call or email us to discuss your options.
  • If you have a copay for your medication, we can help you enroll in copay assistance programs.
  • If you have Medicare, Medicaid, or other coverage, our skilled team can help work through any insurance requirements.
How do I get started?

PrEP can help you take control of your sexual health, reduce any stress or anxiety related to HIV, and empower you to stay protected. To find out if PrEP may be right for you, please call 205-975-9232 or email UAB-PrEP@uabmc.edu.
