The field of urology specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the genitourinary tract, which includes the urinary and reproductive systems. At UAB, our team of urologists, radiation and medical oncologists, nurse practitioners, and nurses and technicians work together to provide excellent care to male and female patients of all ages, including children. For more than 40 years, we have continued to expand our clinical care while pioneering many important medical advances. UAB Medicine has been recognized by the Testicular Cancer Awareness Foundation as a Testicular Cancer Center of Excellence – the only one in the Southeast.
UAB urologists have completed fellowship training in their various areas of expertise, such as urologic cancer, minimally invasive surgery (including the use of the da Vinci robotic surgery system), kidney stones, incontinence, infertility, pediatric urology, and general urology. The program is dedicated to patient care, community outreach, research, and education and training for medical residents and fellows. We are involved in many clinical trials, including studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group, along with industry-sponsored research in areas such as bladder regeneration (self-repair).
U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks UAB Urology among the top 50 programs of its kind in the nation, and we are widely recognized for delivering excellent genitourinary cancer care. Our medical and surgical specialists have undergone extensive training in their areas of expertise, and they are active leaders in their fields.
UAB surgeons perform many urologic procedures using minimally invasive techniques, which require only small incisions (cuts). UAB regularly uses the new da Vinci SP Single Port Surgical System, which enables surgeons to enter the body through a single abdominal incision before deploying the robot’s surgical instruments. This innovative design helps improve patient outcomes and recovery times and is particularly beneficial in cancer treatment procedures, as surgeons can now access narrower spaces with better accuracy. The da Vinci SP is the only robotic system approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for urologic surgery and is well-suited for procedures involving prostate cancer, bladder cancer, ureteral reconstruction, ureteral re-implant, and much more.
We also perform PhalloFILL® girth enhancement at our UAB Medicine Urology Clinic at UAB Hospital-Highlands. PhalloFILL® girth enhancement is a procedure that uses hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to improve your natural anatomy without affecting function. This non-surgical, outpatient procedure provides semi-permanent results that are tailored to your specific preferences and goals. It’s performed under local anesthesia and takes as little as 20 minutes, with minimal recovery time. PhalloFILL® is only available from approved medical professionals and is performed by certified physicians with extensive training. It’s a safe and effective solution for enhancing penis size and appearance.
