Colposcopy is a procedure in which a doctor examines a woman’s cervix, the entrance to the womb (uterus), with a lighted magnifying instrument (colposcope) to look for abnormalities. It is performed following abnormal Pap test results, positive high-risk HPV tests, or when the cervix appears abnormal. The procedure often includes biopsy, a tissue sample to check for disease.
To make abnormalities more visible during the examination, the cervix is pre-stained with a three-percent acetic acid solution, which is like vinegar. If any abnormal areas are seen, a small amount of tissue is taken (biopsy) and sent to a pathologist for evaluation. The procedure takes about 15 minutes in the doctor’s office or clinic. Usually, little or no anesthesia is required for the procedure, although patients are advised to take 400 mg of ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medicine one hour prior to the colposcopy. Patients may experience mild vaginal bleeding and should notify their doctor if bleeding is heavier than a usual menstrual period.
