Allergy and Sinus Disorders

The UAB Medicine Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat, or ENT) Clinic provides complete management of allergy conditions involving the ears, nose, sinuses, mouth, throat, and neck. We use the latest image-guided technology and conduct many office-based procedures, including turbinate reduction therapy, balloon sinuplasty, and allergy testing and treatment.

The Allergy Clinic within the UAB Department of Otolaryngology provides testing and treatment for patients with allergy symptoms related to the ear, nose, and throat (ENT). Food allergy testing often has a high rate of false positive results, which is why we don’t offer them. We also do not test for allergies to medications, chemicals, or stinging insects; we only focus on ENT allergies.

For patients with chronic and recurrent nasal and sinus disease, managing these conditions requires a thorough history and detailed examination that often includes an endoscopy exam and, at times, X-rays to help diagnose patients with sinus and nasal abnormalities. Developing personalized treatment plans for patients with allergies often requires multiple diagnostic tools, including allergy testing, to define the specific trigger for the allergic reaction.

The radioallergosorbent test (RAST), blood tests, and skin testing are examples of such allergy testing. Allergy shots and sublingual allergy drops are forms of immunotherapy used to build up immunity to specific allergens in order to treat allergic rhinitis and allergic rhino-sinusitis. The specialized nurses who assist in the testing and treatment of allergic patients are well-trained, work in collaboration with our board-certified physicians, and provide excellent care and education to our patients. The UAB Medicine Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat, or ENT) Clinic provides complete management of allergy conditions involving the ears, nose, sinuses, mouth, throat, and neck. Our staff includes some of the nation’s most skilled physicians and surgeons – many who are fellowship-trained – and our ENT program is consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best of its kind in the country. In addition to allergy testing and treatment, the clinic offers a wide range of care options for conditions such as head and neck cancer; thyroid and parathyroid issues; ear disorders (including hearing and balance problems); voice, swallowing and airway disorders; sleep disorders such as disruptive snoring and obstructive sleep apnea; and sinus problems.
