A Pap smear is a screening test to find cervical cancer early. Doctors use it to look for abnormal cells that could lead to cancer.
Cervical cancer screening can reduce your risk of getting cervical cancer or dying from the disease. For over sixty years, Pap smears have been routine In the United States, and deaths from cervical cancer have decreased by around 70 percent during that time. Patients should consult with their physician about when and how often a Pap test should be performed.
A Pap smear examines cells collected from the cervix (the opening to the womb) for the presence of infection, inflammation, abnormal cells, and cancer. During cell collection, the patient will lie on a table with feet placed in footrests (stirrups). The doctor or advanced practice provider uses an instrument (speculum) to gently open the vagina only enough to allow access to the cervix. The provider then uses a small, soft brush or swab to collect cells from the opening of the cervix. The cells are sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope.
Most Pap smears are done with human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing as well. The combination of the Pap smear and HPV testing is much more accurate than the Pap smear alone.
