Laparoscopic Sterilization

Laparoscopic sterilization, or bilateral tubal ligation, is a method of permanent birth control for women. The procedure prevents a woman’s eggs from traveling through the fallopian tubes, usually by removing the fallopian tubes. As a result, sperm can no longer fertilize the eggs.

It is performed using a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopy, which requires three small incisions (cuts) on the abdomen. Then, a thin tube called a laparoscope – which has a camera and special tools on the end – is inserted through these incisions to perform the procedure.

This outpatient surgery takes about 30 minutes. Pain medicine is usually required for the first several days. Over-the-counter pain medicine should be taken on a regular schedule, with opioid medication used as needed. Most patients can return to work within 48-72 hours.
