UAB Medicine Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation provides the latest research-based care for patients with heart or lung conditions, to improve their quality of life and help them recover from surgery or other treatments. Our comprehensive rehab programs help patients improve their breathing, increase muscle strength and endurance, complete daily activities more easily, learn how to use medications and oxygen correctly, and avoid hospital stays. Patients are educated and assisted in reducing their risk for heart and lung disease, and for those who’ve already completed their programs, we provide maintenance plans to sustain the recovery and lifestyle they worked so hard to achieve. We also offer several support groups that meet monthly, as well as classes for quitting smoking and making other healthy lifestyle changes.
Our programs go far beyond exercise. We provide highly personalized rehabilitation plans, developed by an experienced team of health professionals that includes cardiologists and pulmonologists, registered nurses, exercise physiologists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, psychologists, and health educators. Our services are nationally certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and supported by the advanced technology, facilities, and equipment at UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center. Exercise sessions are medically supervised and last about an hour. Many of the treatment programs last 12 weeks but may run longer or shorter depending on the patient’s individual needs.
Our programs are designed for patients with a wide range of heart and lung conditions. For more details and additional information, see the UAB Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation brochure here.
