UAB rated among ‘Best Hospitals for Maternity Care’ by U.S. News in 2025

UAB Hospital once again was rated as high-performing in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals for Maternity Care” 2025 survey, which is the highest possible rating.

In summer 2024, U.S. News & World Report (USNWR) invited hospitals that offer maternity care to self-report their maternity-related data. Similar to USNWR’s Best Hospitals rankings, the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care survey uses patient outcomes and hospital process and structure measures to evaluate care quality. The results are weighted to create a composite score.

Among other criteria, high-performing hospitals had fewer C-sections, fewer severe newborn complications, lower episiotomy rates, and higher rates of breastfeeding compared to other hospitals.

A reflection of quality

The ratings provide useful information for expecting parents, who must look at many factors when choosing where to seek maternity care. Services and amenities offered by surveyed hospitals – as well as their performance in key measures of safety and quality – are important considerations. UAB’s recognition indicates a consistent pursuit of quality and excellence.

Warner Huh, M.D., chair of the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, says the recognition reflects the quality care and expertise that UAB nurses, staff, advanced practice providers, and faculty provide every day. “It’s truly gratifying to see this group be properly recognized for their selfless, compassionate work,” Dr. Huh said. “I look forward to establishing new programs and setting new standards for maternity care at UAB.”

Originally formed in 1945, the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has more than 75 years of expertise in improving the lives of the women it serves through excellence in clinical care, research, and education. In addition to providing routine gynecologic services, UAB OB/GYN specialists offer the latest advances in reproductive health care.

On the research front, the department is among the top 15 U.S. programs for National Institutes of Health funding, which demonstrates UAB’s commitment to advancing the field of OB/GYN care through innovation and research.
