UAB Medicine is ringing in the new year with a full-service urology clinic at UAB St. Vincent’s East that opened on Jan. 12. UAB Urology East offers patients the latest treatments and the same level of personalized care they can expect throughout UAB Medicine.
“We have world-class doctors there, so patients in the community will get all of the benefits of the big UAB closer to home,” said UAB Medicine Ambulatory Services Manager Paige Shoop, MSN, RN, CNOR. “You’ll still get that one-on-one, personalized care with your physician and access to all-new technology but without having to drive downtown.”
In-office procedures
The new clinic offers general urology services for men and women, including care for prostate and bladder disorders, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and urologic cancer. It’s equipped to perform procedures such as cystoscopies and prostate biopsies, which allow for timely diagnoses of cancer and other conditions without visiting a hospital.
It also offers non-surgical robotic treatment for prostate cancer, which means less pain and faster recovery for most male patients.
“The clinic will serve patients with a wide range of conditions, and as a part of UAB Urology, patients who are seen there will have easy access to specialists at the main UAB Medicine campus for surgery and continuing care,” added UAB Department of Urology Chair Thomas Chi, M.D., MBA, FACS.
New providers
The clinic is being led by two urologists new to UAB Medicine: Karishma Gupta, M.D., and Dustin Hyatt, M.D.
“We’re so lucky to have recruited Drs. Hyatt and Gupta to join our faculty,” Dr. Chi said. “These are two very well-trained, talented urologists who are excited to help patients navigate through all the phases of their urology journey.”
“I am really looking forward to working at the new clinic and hoping to build easily accessible urology care for patients and more opportunities when it comes to health literacy and surgical access in the community setting,” Dr. Gupta said.
“I’m very excited about our new clinic,” Dr. Hyatt added. “It will allow us to provide high-quality, compassionate care in the community, and we look forward to serving patients locally and beyond as we continue to build at UAB St. Vincent’s East.”
Expanding access
The new clinic is part of UAB Medicine’s larger effort to serve patients closer to their homes and expand access to specialized care.
“We want it to be a community access location for UAB Urology, as well as a rapid-access clinic where patients can get an appointment with a UAB urologist in a timely fashion,” Dr. Chi said. “Our goal is to make ourselves accessible to all patients with urologic needs in the Birmingham metropolitan area. Having a presence at UAB St. Vincent’s East will help us achieve that.”
UAB Urology East is located in suite 300 on the third floor of Building 52 at UAB St. Vincent’s East. The clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and free parking is available in front of the building.
