For the second consecutive year, UAB Medicine Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) John Petrov was named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s list of “CHROs and Chief People Officers to Know”. This annual list highlights human resources leaders who play a key role in shaping workforce strategy and organizational culture across health systems nationwide.

Petrov leads workforce strategy for UAB Medicine, an $8 billion academic health system with more than 36,000 physicians and employees. His responsibilities span core HR areas, including talent acquisition, workforce planning, leadership development, HR operations and information systems, workforce analytics, and change management.

Since assuming the CHRO role in January 2024, Petrov has focused on strengthening HR operations while supporting employees through a period of significant system change, including the acquisition of the Ascension St. Vincent’s Health System.

Petrov introduced new approaches to employee engagement and recognition, including the launch of Applause, a systemwide platform that allows for real-time peer and leader recognition. Applause connects engagement efforts more directly to retention, reinforcing a culture where employees feel valued and supported.

Before joining UAB Medicine, Petrov served in CHRO roles at VCU Health in Richmond, Va., and The Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, Penn.

“John has brought a thoughtful and steady approach to strengthening our workforce strategy during a time of significant change,” said UAB Health System Chief Operating Officer Janet Hadar. “His focus on supporting employees and building a strong HR foundation is helping position UAB Medicine for continued success.”
