MOBILE, AL (November 3, 2026) – Infirmary Health is expanding local access to women’s health with a new maternal-fetal medicine telemedicine clinic at Mobile Infirmary.
In partnership with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Medicine, patients will consult with UAB maternal-fetal medicine physicians while continuing to receive care from their local obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) providers.
Maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) is an OB-GYN specialty focused on caring for pregnant women who have high-risk pregnancies or medical conditions that could affect the mother’s health or baby’s development. Specialists treat patients for various conditions including fetal growth concerns, suspected abnormalities or maternal conditions that could complicate pregnancy. These specialists also provide counseling for complex medical conditions with the mother or baby.
The clinic is designed to strengthen care coordination and expand local access to maternal-fetal medicine consultation.
“Being able to provide this new maternal-fetal telemedicine service to Mobile Infirmary puts a spotlight on women’s healthcare and access to care for prenatal patients in our communities,” said Susan Boudreau, president of Mobile Infirmary. “We want women and their families to have the highest level of care when needed most and we want this service to be convenient for them. We connect our local clinic with UAB’s expertise, which offers better support for families across our region.”
Alabama faces significant challenges in maternal and infant health with high mortality rates and declining access to obstetric care, particularly specialized maternal-fetal medicine services.
Akila Subramaniam, M.D., M.P.H., a UAB maternal-fetal medicine physician and director of UAB’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, emphasized the need for expanded access to specialized care and how the clinic will address these challenges.
“By providing innovative imaging solutions with real-time image review and consultation, we offer an additional level of care to support local patients and providers,” she said. We are committed to providing high-quality care and expertise to better serve our patients.”
Mobile Infirmary can care for many premature newborns in its Level II Special Care Nursery, including babies born at 32 weeks gestation or later, with access to additional specialized services when a higher level of care is needed.
Since 2024, Infirmary Health and UAB Medicine have collaborated to expand cancer care services for patients in southern Alabama and neighboring Gulf Coast communities. The maternal-fetal telemedicine clinic extends that relationship into women’s health services further advancing access to specialized care.
The telemedicine clinic is located at 1720 Springhill Avenue, suite 401, in Mobile. Referrals are needed for an appointment. To learn more, call 251-210-3250 or visit the clinic’s webpage.
