Have you ever been on a run and suddenly your favorite song started playing? Chances are it gave you an extra boost.

UAB School of Education Associate Professor Christopher Ballmann, Ph.D., has shown through his research why music can have a positive – or sometimes negative – impact on exercise routines or athletic performance.

UAB Medicine’s Critical Care Transport (CCT) service provides airborne and ground medical care for patients with serious conditions who need to be moved from one medical facility to another. It celebrated 40 years of service in March 2023, and in October it added a fifth ground transport vehicle that features the latest technology in transport capability and safety.

“Recently, Caleb and I walked to our cars together after work, as we usually do. Around 7:45 p.m., on our separate drives home in opposite directions on I-65, Caleb and I were in the middle of a deep and thoughtful conversation regarding how to improve the patient care and experience at UAB Hospital Emergency Department, when Caleb suddenly said, “Oh my goodness, they are doing CPR on the side of the interstate! I’ve got to help.” Without hesitation and full of concern for a random person in medical need, Caleb pulled to the side of the interstate and stated, “I’ll call you back.”  I said “ok,” hung up, and then called his wife so that she was aware of what was happening. Caleb is a true health care hero.”

From January to May of 2023, Shelby Lyda, M.D., was extremely tired and had brain fog, but she chalked it up to the demands of a residency program.
Lyda was within UAB Department of Surgery Residency Program at the time, completing her research year. She thought the fatigue and brain fog had to do with the stresses of her work.

The holiday season can be a time filled with friends, family and, of course, holiday food and beverages. While it is perfectly fine to indulge in one’s favorite food and beverages this holiday season, it is best to avoid overindulging in these items, which can potentially lead to a condition known as holiday heart syndrome — also known as atrial fibrillation, or an irregular heartbeat that is associated with binge drinking. AFib caused by holiday heart syndrome can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and even heart attacks.
