The UAB Health System and Infirmary Health have entered a relationship to bring collaborative, comprehensive cancer services to patients in southern Alabama, southeast Mississippi and the Florida panhandle. The result of a multi-year planning effort on behalf of the leadership of the two organizations, this partnership was born with the goal of decreasing the burden of cancer, improving outcomes, and expanding cancer scientific discovery through an increased footprint and resources of both organizations.

This exclusive list highlights leaders who develop short- and long-term strategic plans that drive progress at their hospitals and health systems.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has received eight 2024 Women’s Choice Awards designations for women’s health practice areas.

UAB Hospital was designated as a Magnet organization in 2002, 2006, 2011, 2015, and 2019 by the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®.  This prestigious designation recognizes excellence in nursing services.  In February 2024, UAB Hospital is applying for re-designation.

Each January, National Birth Defects Awareness Month is observed to raise awareness, help improve the health of people with these conditions, and expand the networks of support. Most birth defects are not preventable, and many are critical conditions that can cause lifelong challenges. However, thanks to medical advances in diagnosis and treatment, women and their babies now receive better care than ever before.

UAB Medicine has opened a new orthopaedic urgent care clinic at UAB Hospital-Highlands. It was created to serve patients who don’t require treatment in an emergency room but do need care from advanced practice providers (APPs) for minor injuries involving the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, or muscles.

UAB Medicine’s Critical Care Transport (CCT) service provides airborne and ground medical care for patients with serious conditions who need to be moved from one medical facility to another. It celebrated 40 years of service in March 2023, and in October it added a fifth ground transport vehicle that features the latest technology in transport capability and safety.

“Recently, Caleb and I walked to our cars together after work, as we usually do. Around 7:45 p.m., on our separate drives home in opposite directions on I-65, Caleb and I were in the middle of a deep and thoughtful conversation regarding how to improve the patient care and experience at UAB Hospital Emergency Department, when Caleb suddenly said, “Oh my goodness, they are doing CPR on the side of the interstate! I’ve got to help.” Without hesitation and full of concern for a random person in medical need, Caleb pulled to the side of the interstate and stated, “I’ll call you back.”  I said “ok,” hung up, and then called his wife so that she was aware of what was happening. Caleb is a true health care hero.”

From January to May of 2023, Shelby Lyda, M.D., was extremely tired and had brain fog, but she chalked it up to the demands of a residency program.
Lyda was within UAB Department of Surgery Residency Program at the time, completing her research year. She thought the fatigue and brain fog had to do with the stresses of her work.
