The human body has millions of microorganisms that are collectively known as the human biome, and these microbes help with many important functions involving the digestive, immune, and reproductive systems. The microbes in the digestive system are known as the gut biome. “Gut health” refers to the well-being of this biome and the body’s overall ability to digest food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste.

There are many types of eczema, and each may have causes and triggers related to genetic conditions, stress, and other factors. People with eczema usually have an immune system that produces inflammation after contact with certain materials or due to environmental factors, leading to dry and itchy patches of skin.

The Advanced Practice Provider Executive Council (APPEC), in collaboration with the APP Central Office, presented the first APP Champion Awards this week. This new award recognizes exceptional UAB Medicine APPs who exemplify our Core Values and drive excellence across the organization.

Given the national shortage of nurses, one way a health system can build stability in its workforce is by fostering career growth among current staff.

The UAB Medicine/Wallace State Community College (UAB/WSCC) Nursing Workforce Initiative (NWI) creates a pathway for full-time UAB Medicine employees to advance their career by earning a licensed practical nurse (LPN) certificate or associate degree in nursing (ADN), effective in 2023. Enrollment in the NWI has increased tenfold since it launched in 2022 as a scholarship program funded by UAB Medicine.

Every year in the United States, 3,500 infants between the ages of one month and one year die tragically – while sleeping – from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) or sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). These deaths are occurring in Black babies at twice the rate of white babies, and Alabama has one of the highest infant death rates in the country.

Patients diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism or an endocrine-related condition may require a surgical procedure to help their condition. Endocrine surgeons treat diseases related to the endocrine system by removing all or part of the affected gland. Surgery options include both minimally invasive and robotic-assisted procedures alongside open surgeries.

With kids back in school and cooler temperatures on the way, the fall season also brings pollen and viruses that can cause respiratory problems for even the healthiest people. Those with seasonal asthma may face more serious complications, so experts say it’s important to watch for triggers, take precautions, and make sure your condition is under control.

Dale Davis, RN, BSN, is having a full-circle moment.

He retired in July 2023 after 29 years at UAB Medicine, but after just one week, Davis returned to work where his UAB career first began: in the UAB Emergency Department as a nurse.
