UAB School of Nursing student Emily Fonville’s path to becoming a nurse has not been without its challenges. Diagnosed with a severe case of Type 1 diabetes in 2015, Fonville has been hospitalized 37 times since then. While her complicated health history has tested her in numerous ways, it was through her treatment and health care experiences that she found her calling and UAB.

UAB Nursing would like to congratulate the latest nurse residents on completing their program. The Nurse Residency is a comprehensive, 12-month program for newly licensed nurses that helps them transition into more competent clinical practice.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham celebrated the relocation and expansion of services of its primary care clinic in the Birmingham area today with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new clinic location in Lee Branch. The staff at UAB Medicine Lee Branch Primary and Specialty Care will see adult patients for a wide range of non-emergency medical conditions.

UAB Medicine nursing staff celebrated at a variety of events this May during Nurses Week 2024. The activities included a Birmingham Barons baseball game, a scavenger hunt, photo booths, an award ceremony, a wellness conference, and tailgate events. It was all about recognizing our nurses for consistently giving their best to care for patients and their families. Take a look at all the fun we had!

Regular physician visits and medical screenings are critical to maintaining one’s health. However, women are often unsure about what tests they need and at what age, which doctors they should be seeing annually, and what physiological changes they may experience at certain ages.

This week, a structural heart team composed of interventional cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Cardiovascular Institute were among the first in the world to complete the first valve-in-valve procedure using a new transcatheter aortic valve replacement system.

Clifton Booth had long considered becoming a living kidney donor, but he wasn’t sure it was the right course of action for him. Then, in fall 2017, he encountered an acquaintance who had been a donor and encouraged Booth to consider it.

UAB Medicine’s Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) and Acute Trauma Care Unit (ATCU) each received a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). These awards recognize units that distinguish themselves by providing high-quality patient care in a healthy work environment. With these latest honors, UAB Medicine’s critical-care nursing units have earned five Beacon Awards over the past four years.

People who have received transplants understand that organ transplantation offers a second chance at life. UAB Medicine patients Lucy Emonina and her daughter, Ovuke’ McCoy, share that understanding in a deeper way. They both were born with a serious heart condition and later received heart transplants. Since then, mother and daughter have enjoyed active lives, sharing their stories in various ways and serving as ambassadors for heart health and organ donation awareness.
