John Petrov, SPHR, SHRM-SCP
Chief Human Resources Officer, UAB Health System
With over 20 years of human resources experience, Petrov serves as an employee advocate with a focus on delivering exceptional customer service to all. He and his team are responsible for setting the vision for employee engagement and belonging that aligns with UAB Health System’s mission, vision, and values while promoting a culture of diversity, inclusion, innovation, lifelong learning, and talent development.
Petrov joined UAB Health System in January 2024 from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health in Richmond, Va., where he served as senior vice president and chief human resources officer. Prior to VCU Health, he worked at The Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, Pa., where he served as executive vice president and chief caregiver officer. He also served at CHI Saint Joseph Health in Lexington, Ky., where he was senior vice president and chief human resources officer as well as vice president of human resources for its parent entity, Common Spirit Health.
Throughout his career, Petrov has positioned several of his past employers to be recognized nationally and locally among the Best Places to Work in the communities they serve. He received a Master of Arts in human resource management from Briar Cliff University and a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Colorado Technical University. He is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources through the HR Certification Institute, is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and a SHRM Senior Certified Professional. Petrov obtained a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace Certificate from the USF Muma College of Business.
