Cold knife conization (CKC) is a procedure used to remove tissue from a woman’s cervix, the entrance to the womb (uterus). It is most often used as a treatment for precancerous changes but may also help to diagnose abnormal cells. CKC is usually performed after a test called colposcopy has identified abnormal cells, including precancerous changes (dysplasia).
CKC is the removal of a cone-shaped piece of tissue containing abnormal cells, which is often the only treatment needed for precancerous changes in the cervix. Cold knife conization allows the surgeon to take a larger amount of tissue than biopsies performed as part of a colposcopy.
The tissue removed is examined under a microscope for signs of disease. If all abnormal cells are not fully removed or if invasive cancer is found, additional treatment is required.
CKC is performed under regional or general anesthesia. The duration of the procedure may vary depending on the surgeon’s findings, but it often takes less than one hour. Patients often return to work the following day, although they will experience some cramping and bleeding. Patients will be advised to avoid heavy lifting and sexual intercourse during the few weeks after CKC.
