A headache is a painful sensation that can occur in nearly any region of the head, producing symptoms ranging from mildly uncomfortable to debilitating. It can last anywhere from a few hours to several days and may feel like a sharp, piercing sensation isolated to one area, or a dull throbbing that radiates across the head. Typically classified by the source of pain, primary headaches are the most common. These headaches can be very painful but usually are not associated with an underlying disease. Migraines, tension, and cluster headaches are types of primary headaches. Secondary headaches are connected to diseases such as sinus infections and brain tumors that may trigger pain-sensitive nerves in the head.
