A headache is a painful sensation that can occur in nearly any region of the head. They can range from mild to severe and last from a few hours to several days. One common sensation from a headache is a sharp, piercing pain in one area of the head. Another common sensation is a dull throbbing that radiates across the head.
Types of headaches
Doctors classify headaches based on the source of the pain. Primary headaches, those that directly result from sensitive areas in and around the neck and head, are the most common. These headaches can be painful but usually are not connected to an underlying disease. Migraines, tension, and cluster headaches are types of primary headaches.
Secondary headaches are connected to other conditions. such as sinus infections and brain tumors. These conditions may trigger nerves in the head.
