Program Highlights

The UAB Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation provides advanced inpatient and outpatient care and conducts important research to help improve the long-term function and quality of life for patients with an injury or disability. We are home to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, and we’ve helped advance research by serving as both a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System and Spinal Cord Injury Model System site for over 50 years. Much of our care is provided at UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center, one of only 15 U.S. facilities to earn the Dr. Joanne Smith Memorial Rehabilitation Innovation Center designation.

The UAB Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) is leading the way in meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities through compassionate care, cutting-edge research, and training the next generation of professionals. Our physiatrists work closely with patients and their families, along with a multispecialty team of rehab psychologists, neuropsychologists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, and other rehabilitation professionals. Together, we design complete, patient-centered treatment plans and provided the latest treatments to maximize function and quality of life for our patients.
