Surgery Grand Rounds Schedule
Learning Objective / Overview: UAB Medicine Surgeon-in-Chief Herbert Chen, MD, discusses hyperparathyroidism (HPT), which affects roughly 1 percent of the U.S. population and is more common in women and the elderly. It is the third most common endocrine disorder after diabetes and thyroid disease. Marked by an abnormally high concentration of parathyroid hormone in the blood, HPT results in a loss of calcium and weakened bones. The only curative option is surgery, a minimally invasive procedure called radio-guided parathyroidectomy, which offers numerous quality-of-life benefits for patients, a short recovery time, and very little risk. Dr. Chen has performed nearly 2,000 such procedures at UAB and recommends that all patients with HPT be referred for a surgical consult.
