How to Apply

It is important to know that your application experience may be different depending on where you would like to work within UAB Medicine:

  • If you are applying to work at UAB Hospital, UAB Hospital-Highlands, The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, UAB Callahan Eye Hospital and UAB Callahan Eye Hospital Clinics, or UAB Health System, you will create a candidate profile and submit an application through their applicant tracking system.

  • If you are applying to work at UA Health Services Foundation or any of our outlying Ambulatory Clinics, you will create a candidate profile and submit an application through a different applicant tracking system.

The applicant tracking systems are independent of one another, and you will only be able to save your information, view jobs you have applied to or check the status of your application within the system you applied through.

A resume is an important tool in a job search as it is often your first introduction to a hiring manager. It is used to:

  • Give the hiring manager enough information to consider you for an interview.
  • Supplement the information included in your online profile.
  • Focus attention on your skills and experiences.
  • Demonstrate your written communication skills.

When creating a resume or listing out your job history, please go back as far as possible and include all experience within the past 15 years. Be prepared to address any gaps in employment.

Developing Your Resume

Take the time to develop a resume that will best highlight your skills and experiences.  Make a list of your present and past experiences, accomplishments and skills.  Select from this list the information that will be pertinent for your resume and the job for which you are applying. Elaborate on your list by writing a short, concise description of each experience, accomplishment or skill. Begin each phrase with an action verb.  Organize your resume in an effective format by placing the most critical information first.

Things to Include

Contact information: name, address, phone number, and email address
Summary: brief statement at the top of your resume highlighting your career objectives or qualifications
Education: school name, location, degree, graduation date, grade point average (GPA), honors
Work experience: company name, location, position title, dates (list work experience in chronological order with your most recent experience at the top), duties/accomplishments (use action verbs and list transferable skills)
Professional certifications, memberships, licenses
Skills: technical skills, computer skills, languages

Things NOT to Include

  • Personal data (age, religion, personal photographs, and family status)
  • Abbreviations and acronyms – unless you know the reader is familiar with them
  • Misspellings – have others proofread your resume for correct spelling and grammar


Do Your Research

  • Read and familiarize yourself with our UAB Medicine Core Values.
  • Be familiar with general interview questions to determine how you have handled certain situations in the past.  Be specific in your answers, with real-life examples.  Questions typically focus on key behaviors relevant to the position you are interviewing for and may include:

During the Interview

  • Dress appropriately for the job you are applying for. Many times this means dressing more conservatively fashion than your usual style and often a step above what you would wear on a normal work day.
  • Arrive early.  Parking is difficult, be sure to have a clear plan for where you are going, where you will park and how long it will take you to get there.
  • Bring a few copies of your resume to share if needed.
  • Stay on point when answering questions and be careful not to ramble. Make sure you listen to the question fully to allow you to answer correctly.
