General Medicine Unit

The General Medicine Unit provides care to adult patients with a variety of general medical needs. General Medicine is a 30 bed unit that serves Tinsely Harrison medicine, the largest teaching service for the UAB School of Medicine. We provide care to patients age 18 and older with a wide variety of illnesses and comorbidities. We also serve as the primary infectious disease unit.

Patient Population

  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Diabetes
  • Pneumonia
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Skin Integrity Disorders

Number of Beds

  • 30

Nurse/Patient Ratio

  • 1:3-4

Rotation/Shifts

  • 7a-7p and 7p-7a
  • Modified self scheduling
  • Work every 4th weekend

Skill Mix

  • 100% Registered Nurses due to high acuity of patients

Nursing Unit Orientation

  • 6-8 weeks with previous experience
  • 8-12 weeks for new graduates and non experienced RNs
