Apply Now to Join Our Expanding, Dynamic BMT Team in its New Unit Space
UAB Medicine’s Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit is expanding into brand new clinical space, and we need nurses to join our dynamic team!
BMT is an oncology unit that provides chemotherapy, followed by stem cell or bone marrow transplantation in patients with a cancer diagnosis. We also serve some Medical ICU patients. The unit will expand to 29 beds and keep our amazing nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2-3. UAB is the only hospital in Alabama that offers this treatment.
Our nurses practice cutting-edge medicine in the ever-changing world of oncology therapy – sometimes administering new drugs for the first time ever to humans. These staff nurses are the ones who actually perform the transplant. Nurse Manager Wendy Madden, RN, says, “It’s a truly unique experience and so satisfying to play such a huge role in restoring patients’ immune systems after their cancer therapy.”
The team culture is fun, supportive, and “like family.” The orientation process is individualized and thorough, and the managers subscribe to the “no one is an island” mentality, offering continued mentorship and support. The assistant nurse managers are just as hands on as the staff nurses, and the physicians truly listen to the staff. Nurses have a voice here, and it is a key aspect of a five-time-designated Magnet organization such as UAB.
Our staff often treat patients over the long term, so close bonds are common. On patients’ transplant day, the staff surprises them with a “Happy Happy Transplant Day” song, cake, and a giant card signed by the entire team. Patient satisfaction scores typically are stellar, and relationships remain strong through post-treatment follow-up clinic appointments.
If you’re looking for a great place to grow your RN career and want to be a part of a dynamic team that performs treatments not available anywhere else in the state, please apply to join the BMT unit! AM and PM full-time positions are available.
