About UAB Weight Loss Medicine
UAB Weight Loss Medicine (WLM) is a medical clinic that helps individuals lose weight and keep it off. Our overall goal is to help you live a healthier life. We combine a focus on diet and nutrition with other services, including medical oversight from physicians, FDA-approved medications when appropriate, group visits, and behavioral therapy. No physician referral is needed for any of our services.
The WLM team includes physicians who are board-certified in obesity medicine as well as internal medicine and endocrinology. We also have a team of registered dietitians and diabetes educators, nurse practitioners, psychologists, and exercise trainers. This comprehensive team approach is designed to provide the tools you need to lose weight and maintain a healthier you.
There is not one diet or meal plan that works for everyone, so our providers help you tailor our programs and services to meet your specific needs.
Programs and Services
- Ongoing visits with our physicians and nurse practitioners**
Medical oversight is important, especially if you have underlying health conditions. Our providers explore underlying causes of weight gain or lack of weight loss, collaborate with the dietitians to provide optimal nutrition recommendations, and offer guidance on FDA-approved weight-loss medications.
- Scheduled individual visits with our dietitians**
Our dietitians have more than 35 combined years of weight loss counseling. They help ensure that you are getting proper nutrition while identifying ways to adjust your lifestyle for improved health and weight loss. We’ve worked hard with insurance companies to expand coverage for these visits for most patients.
For those who need to lose 50 pounds or more, the OPTIFAST meal-replacement program has consistently proven successful since its creation in the early 1970s. The program utilizes a full meal replacement plan that transitions to self-prepared “everyday” meals, together with comprehensive patient education and support.
- Jumpstart Program
This 12-week program combines meal-replacement shakes and bars with one meal per day, along with bi-weekly group sessions with our dietitians. We created the Jumpstart Program several years ago and continue to be amazed at the success our patients have when provided with the structure and guidance this program offers. The majority of our patients lose 20-50 pounds during the 12-week program, depending on starting weight.
- Diabetes Prevention Program
Studies show that successful, long-term weight loss requires repeated and frequent interaction with nutrition experts. Our group sessions feature information and tips for continued weight loss success. In addition, these sessions bring support from those who also are working toward healthier lives, so you can share your successes and learn from others. There is benefit in joining, even if you already have substantial nutrition knowledge. Group sessions are available in-person or by video.
- Bi-weekly group sessions led by our dietitians*
Our program is fully accredited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and offers a proven, evidence-based approach to help people diagnosed with pre-diabetes prevent their condition from developing into full diabetes. To qualify, you must be at least 18 years old and have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 24. The program is also open to those at high risk for pre-diabetes or who have a history of gestational diabetes.

State of Slim
State of Slim (SOS) started as a book written by Drs. James Hill and Holly Wyatt. It is based on years of research and clinicalexperience in the fields of body weight regulation, long-term weight loss and maintenance, nutrition, exercise science, psychology, and general wellness. It relies on research from the National Weight Control Registry, which documents over 10,000 people who successfully lost weight, as well as 20-plus years of clinical weight management experience. It also uses data that were collected to help understand why Colorado is the leanest state in the nation.
After the book was published, the principles in State of Slim were used to develop a transformational 16-week weight loss program. It is based on proven science and successful experiences, and the program includes interactive weekly processes to help participants follow the science, lose weight, and keep it off. State of Slim is about creating a new state of being, a new identity, and a better way of living and engaging life through the process of losing weight.
