Gynecologic Cancer Services
The UAB Division of Gynecologic Oncology is a multi-specialty group of physicians, nurses, and consultants who provide comprehensive and compassionate care in treating women’s cancers. Each year, UAB treats more than 2,500 women battling cancer.
As part of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB, the Division of Gynecologic Oncology assists women with the physical and emotional challenges associated with gynecologic cancer. Our experts design customized treatment plans for each patient’s individual needs and use the latest technology to screen for and treat all types of women’s reproductive cancers. Our research team is dedicated to improving treatments and ultimately finding a cure for these cancers.
We offer several unique services not available at most other medical centers. The UAB Sexual Health and Cancer Clinic provides services to female patients either going through cancer treatment or with a history of breast or gynecologic cancer. The clinic offers treatment for sexual dysfunction concerns connected to your cancer diagnosis and treatment, along with counseling, education, and care for related issues.
In addition, UAB Medicine developed a special program to treat gynecological carcinosarcoma (GCS), also known as MMMT (malignant mixed Müllerian tumor). This is a rare and aggressive cancer found primarily in the ovaries and uterus that most commonly occurs in post-menopausal women. As part of our GCS program, UAB is involved in research and clinical trials designed to better understand GCS and improve the survival rate for patients.
The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB provides the latest in advanced cancer care for patients in Alabama and the surrounding region. UAB Medicine employs a team approach, combining multiple specialists who are trained in medical, surgical, and radiation oncology as well as pathology and other key fields.
Our National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only one in a six-state region and one of just 40 in the nation. Our 330-plus physicians and researchers treat an estimated 5,000 new patients each year, and they are dedicated to providing leading-edge care in a compassionate environment while developing a comprehensive treatment plan designed specifically for each patient.
Our excellence has not gone unnoticed. Becker's Hospital Review included UAB on its list of “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs” – a testament to our patient care, cancer outcomes, and research. Also, our oncology program has consistently been recognized for excellence by U.S. News & World Report. Trust your gynecologic cancer care to UAB Medicine. Together with our team of experts, your fight is our fight.
