Pericarditis
Pericarditis is inflammation of the sac-like covering around the heart, called the pericardium. The exact cause of pericarditis is unknown, but it sometimes stems from infections, such as simple viral infections that cause colds, pneumonia, and influenza. Less common viral infections, such as bacterial or fungal infections, also can cause pericarditis. Heart attacks, heart disease, and certain medications have been associated with the condition. Pericarditis may occur in conjunction with other diseases, including cancer, immune system disorders, HIV/AIDS, and kidney failure. Depending on the cause, treatment may not be necessary. Pericarditis is most often diagnosed in men ages 20-50.
